Sand concrete specific weight: weight of 1 m³ and density

The special popularity of sand concrete as a construction material is due to its strength and durability. The method of producing such mixtures is quite simple, the components are freely available and inexpensive. Thus, using sand concrete is economically beneficial both for brick, cinder block and other masonry work and for plastering various surfaces.

Sand Concrete Characteristics

Sand concrete belongs to ready-made construction mixtures. It contains high-quality cement and washed river sand with fraction size not exceeding 4 mm. Additional additives that improve quality characteristics play a major role in pricing. Additives are used to increase:

  • frost resistance;

  • resistance to corrosion processes;

  • strength and other properties.

One of the most demanded grades is M300. Its use reduces construction costs and also lowers the load on the foundation because the weight of M300 sand concrete is lower than that of classic concretes.

M300 sand concrete has a number of advantages:

  • it is reliable and provides especially high strength of finished products or coverings;

  • it withstands large loads: already 4 weeks after application, the load limit per 1 cm2 is 300 kg;

  • it is resistant to sudden temperature changes and high humidity;

  • it is frost-resistant;

  • it is considered environmentally friendly because it does not release harmful substances even at high temperatures;

  • it has relatively low density: the weight of 1 m3 of sand concrete is on average 1900 kg;

  • it has excellent adhesion and is recommended for use under tile and other finishing materials;

  • its price remains affordable compared with alternatives.

Sand fraction sizeCharacteristic featuresArea of use
Fine fraction, 0.8-1.2 mmHigh strength and wear resistanceExterior masonry, floor screed up to 5 cm, high-strength installation mortars
Medium fraction, 1.8-2.2 mmResistance to loads during operationInterior work, installation of paving slabs and curbs, warm floors and screeds up to 10 cm, production of eurofences
Coarse fraction, 2.5-4 mmAverage moisture absorptionConstruction of different foundation types, creation of reinforced floor slabs

Manufacturers also produce sand concrete of other grades. M150, M200 and M400 can be purchased. The higher the value, the stronger the material. Accordingly, the field of application also differs.

Work Features

When preparing and working with sand concrete mortar, certain rules must be followed; otherwise, the positive characteristics of the material will be reduced to nothing.

  • Sand concrete preparation consists of correctly and proportionally mixing the dry mixture with water.

  • After mixing, the mortar should stand for up to 10 minutes, then it must be mixed again.

  • It should be used within several hours before hardening begins.

  • Setting occurs after 8 hours, and the product reaches grade strength after 25-30 days.

  • The calculated ratio of ready dry mix to water is approximately 1.7-2 liters of water. That is, the weight of one cubic meter of sand concrete as mortar will consist on average of 1.6-1.7 t of dry mix and 280-290 liters of water.

Name Density Weight
t/m3 kg/m3 kg/dm3
Sand concrete 2-2.35 2-2.35 2000-2350 2-2.35

When working with sand concrete, a respirator should be used. Storage and transportation rules must also be strictly observed so that the useful properties of the material are not lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the density of sand concrete be used for precise calculations?

The density and weight values for sand concrete in this article are reference values. They are suitable for preliminary estimates, but design, construction, production and other critical calculations should be checked against standards, material datasheets or measurement results.

Why can the actual weight of sand concrete differ from the table?

The actual weight of sand concrete depends on composition, moisture, temperature, porosity, fraction size, material grade and measurement conditions. Because of this, real values may differ from the average table data.

How do you calculate the mass of sand concrete from density?

For an approximate calculation, use the formula: mass = density × volume. If the density of sand concrete is given in kg/m³ and the volume is in m³, the result will be in kilograms.
